Big Stone Gap, VA - Anna Ruth Johnston Shuler, born June 17, 1929 in Woodway, Va., departed this life to go to her Heavenly Home on March 21, 2024, at the age of 94. She was the only daughter of Worley and Lucy Litton Johnston who preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Pennington High School class of 1947. She married Ralph Don Shuler in January, 1948 and was married for 69 years, until his death in October, 2017.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Big Stone Gap and a member of Eastern Star of Big Stone Gap. She was a teacher’s aide at Big Stone Elementary School, as well as Powell Valley Primary for many years where she loved working with children.
Anna is survived by her daughters, Donna Lynn Williams & husband Tom and Karen Franks & husband Clyde; her son, Dennis Shuler & wife Karen, all of Big Stone Gap, Va.; her grandchildren, Jarid Williams & wife Sheryl of Blackstone, Va., Dr. Elizabeth Shuler & husband Brandon Tester of Big Stone Gap, Va., Jason Franks & wife Miyuki of Japan and Amber Stamper & husband Jon of Ky.; her great grandchildren, Paul Franks, Jessica Franks, Patience Stamper, Danny Stamper and Savannah McMillian; her nephews, Richard Shuler and Tim Shuler; special family member, Nan Franks and her canine companion, Shera.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Lee Health & Rehabilitation for their expert care and kindness shown to Anna.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 5:00-7:00pm at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave. W, Big Stone Gap, VA. Funeral services will follow with Pastor Tom Williams and Dr. Garrett Sheldon officiating.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 2:00pm at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are asked to assemble at Gilliam Funeral Home to leave in procession at 1:30pm. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
