Wise, VA – Brenda Sue Sponaugle, 75, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at her home. She was born in Wise County and moved to Michigan at an early age. She moved back to Appalachia, VA in 1984, where she met her husband, Allen, and they married in 1991. She was a Service Desk Manager at Walmart and Family Dollar in Big Stone Gap. Brenda and Allen loved travelling by motorcycle with Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and Idaho being the only states within the United States they hadn’t visited while biking. Brenda was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was a member of Big Stone Gap Church of Christ and Wise Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her son, Brent Clifton; her parents, Anderson and Mary (Barker) Messer and several siblings.
Brenda is survived by her husband of 34 years, Allen Sponaugle; her children, Samuel Sellers, Theresa Crouse and Jennifer Sponaugle; grandson, Noah Sellers; numerous siblings, nieces and nephews; and many friends, including close special friends, Dr. Tommy Potter and his wife, Lauren.
Final arrangements will be private.
