Cora Nell “Cotton” Carroll, 81, of Big Stone Gap, VA went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 8, 2025 at Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by family and loved ones after a long journey with her health.
Cotton was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, VA, the daughter of the late Clyde and Sally Phillips, and one of eight children. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was also a worker of the coal mines for two years.
She is preceded in death by a son, George Henry Carroll Jr; both parents, Clyde and Sally Phillips; three brothers, William Clyde Phillips, Jr., Rex Allen Phillips, and Howard Ray Phillips; and two sisters, Deborah Joan Bolling and Margaret Louise Robinette.
Cotton is survived by her two daughters, Jeannette Davis (Lynn) of Salisbury, NC and Anita “Lynn” Grubb of Big Stone Gap, VA; two brothers, Robert Phillips of Big Stone Gap, VA and Frankie Phillips (Ann) of Big Stone Gap, VA; two grandchildren, Angela Davis of Greenville, NC and David Grubb (Oliver) of Salisbury, NC; three great-grandchildren, Megan Grubb (Josh) of Salisbury, NC, Cody Grubb (Danielle) of Salisbury, NC and Micah Grubb of Salisbury, NC; two special great-nieces, Ana and Jade (Sabrina) of Big Stone Gap, VA and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 11, 2025 from 5:00-7:00pm at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave. W., Big Stone Gap, VA. The funeral service will begin at 7:00pm with Rev. Eddie Kilbourne and Rev. Bud Kilbourne ministering.
The graveside service will be held at 11:00am in American Legion Cemetery, 5015 Powell Valley Road, Big Stone Gap, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:20am to go in procession to the cemetery.
