Dewey Eugene Jones
Gate City, VA – Dewey Eugene Jones “Duke”, age 69, died Friday, September 16, 2022, at his home.
Dewey was born in Wise County to Howard Hubert and Sarah Maudella “Mossie” Pennington Smith Jones. He grew up in the Strawberry Patch community of Big Stone Gap. He attended Cadet Primitive Baptist Church and accepted Christ at a young age. He was a 1970 graduate of Powell Valley High School where he played basketball. After graduation, he attended the University of Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, and received his degree in Business & Public Administration from Clinch Valley College in 1975.
He worked in the mines at Westmoreland Coal Company until 1985. Afterward, he moved to Johnson City, TN where he was the owner of Landmark Video. He worked in the plumbing business for several years before retiring. In his younger days he enjoyed water skiing, and loved to drive his Corvette and Harley Davidson. He appreciated nature and loved to be in it – whether it was fishing, hunting, riding his four-wheeler, or taking in wild animals. If it was football season, he could always be found watching his Tennessee Vols. He spent his final years with his loyal dog, Rusty.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Baxter Merle Smith, Michael Fredrick Jones, and Gary Lee Jones.
Dewey is survived by his daughter, Olivia Rollins and husband Chris of Rye Cove, VA; grandchildren, Elisabeth and William Rollins; sister, Thelma Jean Fields of Corydon, IN; nephews, Tom Ray Fields of New Albany, IN and Adam Fields of Louisville, KY; niece, Tiffany Stringer of Corydon, IN; and special friends, Nick and Revonda Watts, and their children Brett Watts and Zach & Luke Chapman. He also leaves behind several extended family members.
The family will receive friends from 5:00pm – 6:00pm Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap, Va. The service will follow at 6:00pm with Pastor Tucker Begley officiating. Music will be provided by Elisabeth Rollins and Emery Berry.
