Keokee, Va.-Doris Juanita Holmes was born on October 5, 1952 in Port Clinton, Ohio. She married the love of her life, Johnny Holmes, in 1968 and moved to Keokee, Va. where she resided until she left this earth for her Heavenly home on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.
She was blessed with four children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, whom she adored. She enjoyed time with her family, crocheting and cooking. She was always proud that she passed her love for cooking and canning onto her girls.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Johnny Holmes; sons, Johnny “Hopper” Holmes and Joey Clinton Holmes; father, Bill Barnette; and sisters, Marsha Riddle, Norma Hess, Sue Fleenor and Margaret Barnette.
She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (Allen) Stapleton, Keokee and Jamie (Scotty) Mickles, Appalachia, Va.; her grandchildren, Johnathan (Kala) Stapleton, Joshua Holmes, Lacy Holmes (Jeramy Slagel), Tessa Holmes, Taylor (Laythan) Maddin, Bayleigh Mickles, Cody Mickles, Bryan (Megan) Mickles, Derek Mickles and Cameron Herron; her mother, Beulah Booker Robbins; sisters, Rachel Sparks, Beverly Havens; brother, Bill Barnette, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews and very special friends.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm – 3:00pm on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap. The funeral service will follow at 3:00pm with Rev. Paul Davis officiating.
Burial will follow at the Holmes Cemetery, Sigma Community of Keokee, Va.
Pallbearers will be: James Minton, T. J. Hughes, Laythan Maddin, Cody Mickles, Bryan Mickles and Jeramy Slagel.
