Harold Franklin McFarland

Appalachia, Va.-Harold Franklin McFarland, 78, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at the V. A. Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tn.

     He was a native of Dunbar, Va. and had lived in the Andover community since 2007.  Harold was an electrician with the Westmoreland Coal Co. and Cumberland Resources. He was a member of the U.M.W.A., Local #1607.  Harold loved model trains and working on the layout’s landscape.  He loved westerns on television.  

     He was preceded in death by, two infant daughters, Christina and Trina McFarland; parents, James and Mary (Klepper) McFarland; one brother, James C. “Mac” McFarland; an infant sister, Claudia McFarland; and a son-in-law, Michael Robinette.

     Harold is survived by his wife of 49 years, Vesta (Huff) McFarland; children, Tammy Morris (Eric) Kingsport, Tn., Mary Ann Hensley (Tim), Norton, Va., Steven McFarland (Melissa), Appalachia, Va. and Karen Robinette, Talbott, Tn.; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; siblings, Bobby McFarland (Betty), Cement, Ok., Thelma Cornett, Seffner, Fl., Thomas McFarland (Imogene), Panama City, Fl., John Carl McFarland (Brenda), Manassas Park, Va., Linda Dorethea Vanover, Columbus, Oh., Kenneth McFarland, Dunbar, Va., Ralph McFarland (Wanda), Norton, Va. Margaret Lambert (Forrest), Stonega, Va. and Rosemary Browning (Roger), Dunbar, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

     The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, January 30, 2020 at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap. The funeral service will follow at 7:00pm with Pastor Hunter McFarland officiating. 

     A military graveside rite, by the American Legion Post #3/265, will be 1:00pm Friday, January 31, 2020 at Mountain Home Veterans Cemetery, 53 Memorial Ave., Mountain Home, Tn.  The family and friends will meet at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m. Friday.

     Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
