Herbert Lee Flanary

Big Stone Gap, Va.-Herbert Lee Flanary, 91, passed away peacefully at Holston Valley Medical Center on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

      He was born in Arno, Va. on Nov. 8, 1928. He was a lifelong resident of Southwest Virginia and was currently living in Olinger, Va.  He was a retired coal miner with the Westmoreland Coal Co. and a 70-year member of the U. M. W. A., District #19, Local #1055. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing salad peas.  He loved watching the Powell Valley Vikings play football.

     He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Laney Flanary; parents, Rev. James Vilder and Vestie Flanary; grandson, Presley Lee Flanary; five brothers, Earl, Ed, Ray, Ralph and Melvin Flanary; and six sisters, Ethel, Eppie, Virgie, Thelma, Dovie and Barbara.

     Surviving are his children, Carson, Bill, and Tracy Flanary, Big Stone Gap; Kenneth Flanary and wife, Zella, Olinger, Va.; Judy Kelley and husband, David of Big Stone Gap, and Janice Flanary of Franklin, Oh.; grandchildren, Charles Phipps of Big Stone Gap; Brett and Caroline Douglas and children, Mary and Chad, Big Stone Gap; Chris Flanary and his son, Christopher, Franklin, Oh., Nathan and Candace Flanary, Big Stone Gap and Katelyn Flanary and her sons, Brydon and Jaxen, Kingsport, Tn.; and several nieces and nephews.

     The family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2020 at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap. The funeral will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Adam Swinney officiating.

     A graveside committal service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.  The family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:20 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

     Pallbearers will be Kenneth Flanary, Nathan Flanary, Tracy Flanary, Bill Flanary, Chris Flanary, Brett Douglas, Charles Phipps and David Kelley.
