James Albert Shafer

Damascus, Va.-James Albert Shafer, Jr., 84, passed away on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Lee County Community Hospital, Pennington Gap, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Stella Virginia (Ferguson) Shafer; sister, Mary Shafer Henry; and brother, Marshall Shafer.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley (Putnam) Shafer and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was a man of varied talents and skills. His computer skills were unmatched, successfully owning and operating Alvarado Computer Services for many years. He was an excellent carpenter, building top quality cabinetry within his home. He was an accomplished photographer, always looking for the “best shot, angle, and lighting”. He was also an accomplished musician, playing bluegrass on his fiddle and volunteering as a musical engraver for orchestral pieces years ago when it was considered a true art and skill set.
But, most importantly, Jim was a deeply spiritual man, dedicating his life to his God, Jehovah, at the tender age of 7. He lived up to that dedication every day of his life. Jim served as an elder in several different congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 60 years. He helped many people experience the same happiness that comes with true spirituality as he had enjoyed (Matthew 5:3). He also worked extra to support his wife in her volunteer Bible education work, which has been her lifelong passion.
Because of his appreciation and love of God’s Word and the principles therein, he had not just a successful, but very happy marriage to the love of his life, Shirley, for almost 59 years. Jim leaves behind an outstanding example of love, loyalty, and faith.
A Zoom Memorial service is being planned for Monday, August 2, 2021. Please contact family and/or friends for the details.
As the preaching of “the good news of God’s Kingdom” was Jim’s first and foremost focus in life, he expressed his wish for any memorial donations to be made to: Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc, ATTN: Accounting, 900 Red Mills Road, Wallkill, NY 12589-5200. Or, an electronic donation can be made at www.JW.org.
Gilliam Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve Mr. Shafer’s family.
