James Howe Poole Sr
Big Stone Gap, Va.-James Howe Poole, Sr., 78, passed away early Sunday, August 28, 2022, at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Ky.
Born in Osaka, Va., he also lived in Detroit, Mich. during his early adult life, and moved back to Wise County, Va. in 1971. Mr. Poole proudly served In the U. S. Army and the Army Reserves. He worked as a coal miner for Westmoreland Coal Co. and was a member of the U. M. W. A. District #17. He was a member and deacon of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Appalachia, Va. Mr. Poole enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Willie Poole; brothers, Johnny Poole, Jr., Sammy Lee Poole, Clarence Poole, Theodore Poole, Louis Poole and Thomas Poole.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Barbara Giles Poole; children, James Poole, Jr., Sean Poole, Kevin Giles and Timothy Lamont Giles, all of Big Stone Gap, Tammy Poole and Patricia Poole, both of Detroit, Mi. and Carlos Gulley, Blacksburg, Va.; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Mary Burney, Big Stone Gap; brother, George Poole (Barbara), Detroit, Mi.; several nieces and nephews; daughters-in-law, Nancy Giles and Stacie Giles; brother-in-law, Ronald Giles (Earline), Nashville, Tn.; and two special friends, Bill and Frances Fortson, Detroit, Mi., Terry Givens, Big Stone Gap and George and Carolyn Smith, Big Stone Gap.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00am Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Carolyn Smith officiating. The family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50am Thursday.
