James Verlin McElyea
Big Stone Gap, Va.-James Verlin McElyea, 70, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap. He proudly served in the U. S. Army in Europe. He worked as a coal miner for various companies throughout the area for nearly 20 years. He loved college football and playing billiards, “shooting pool.” He was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. and Ada (Smith) McElyea; and siblings, Roger McElyea and Barbara Hall.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Doris Caudill McElyea; son, Travis McElyea, Piney Flats, Tn.; daughter, Nicole Bryant (Jason), Coeburn, Va.; two grandchildren, Blissany Rowe and Grayson Bryant; siblings, Della Shupe, Rockville, Md., Darlene Gallihar, Kathy Swiney (Walter), and Charlie McElyea, all of Big Stone Gap; several nieces and nephews; and his favorite canine buddy, Chumlee.
Final arrangements are private.
