Jean DeVault Hendrick

Big Stone Gap, VA-Jean DeVault Hendrick, 91, passed away surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, February 25, 2020 after a long, hard fought battle with kidney disease.  

    Born March 6, 1928, she was a native of Bluefield, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Victor Reid and Mary Galloway DeVault.  

    Her husband, Bill was the former Editor and Manager of The Post and Wise Printing Company, and Jean could always be found working in the front office, right beside her beloved husband.  Jean was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Big Stone Gap.  While at Trinity, she cherished singing in the chancel choir, retiring after her failing eyesight.

As an active member of her community, Jean served on several committees and organizations. She was a member of the Big Stone Gap Music Study Club’s annual productions of Broadway musicals.  In the production Fiddler on the Roof, she showcased her skills as a violinist as the fiddler. Jean was a member of the Big Stone Gap Garden Club, Community Concerts Tours and the Community Chorus.  Jean volunteered with The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama for many years.  She was a member of the Blue Fox Guild of the John Fox, Jr. House.

     She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ellen Fraley.  Jean is survived by her beloved husband, Bill Hendrick, of 60 years; four daughters, Rebecca (Becky) Duncan of Orlando, Florida; Diane (Jerry) Marks of Lebanon, Ohio; Jamie Hendrick of Big Stone Gap; Paige (Chris) Crafton of Holly Springs, North Carolina; and honorary son, Tim (Patty) Trent of Farmville, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey (Tammy) Duncan, Len Woodrough, Megan (Hans) Wagner, Bethany (Kyle) Rogers, Jaren (Haley) Kegley, Taylor Crafton and Zakary Crafton; and honorary grandchild Katy Trent; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; niece Karen Fraley Bumgardner and nephew Reid Fraley.  

    Special thanks to LifeCare Ambulance Service, MEOC Transportation, Fresenius Dialysis (Norton and Kingsport), Asbury Place (Baysmont House), and caregivers for their untiring dedication.

    The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2020, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 203 E. First Street, S., Big Stone Gap.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Burlingham officiating.  Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.   

     Honorary pallbearers will be: Jaren Kegley, Zak Crafton, Jeffrey Duncan, Tim Trent, Jerry Marks, Chris Crafton, Hans Wagner and Kyle Rogers.
