Appalachia, Va./Brookwood, Ala.-Jerry Rutherford, Sr. came into this world on August 27, 1939 in Appalachia, Va. and was welcomed into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Monday, December 4, 2023, in Brookwood, Ala.
Jerry loved baseball, football, hunting and fishing, but most of all, he loved his wife and kids. He was a very hard worker as a coal miner and always provided for his family. He served as a Deacon, among several other positions, at First Baptist Church in Appalachia under Nick Brewer. His kind and gracious spirit will be greatly missed by everyone, especially his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Pat Rutherford and Dora Aistrop Rutherford; siblings, Rosa Fay Clepper, Geneva Baily, Betty Kelly, Delores Price, Louise Eldridge, Don Rutherford, Harold Rutherford, and Larry Rutherford.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Shirley (Jones) Rutherford; children, Darla Boyd, Sharon Newhouse, Robin Rutherford and Jerry “Monk” Rutherford, Jr.; grandchildren, Ashley and Chloe Stallard, Tyler Rutherford, Kelsey Rutherford, Jacob Rutherford, Tory, Tyler, Travis Conley and Ethan Collins; great grandchildren, Spencer Wyatt and Lydia Stallard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 11:00am – 1:00pm Friday, December 8, 2023, at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap. The service will follow at 1:00pm with Dr. Nick Brewer officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be: Monk Rutherford, Robin Rutherford, Kenny Boyd, Larry C. Rutherford, Ed Rich and Brian Kelly.
