Big Stone Gap, VA – Johnny Kyle Woodward, 83, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at his home surrounded by family.
Born in Lynch, KY, he lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap. He was a 1963 graduate of Powell Valley High School. He served in Germany while in the U.S. Army, from 1963 to 1967, and served in Iraq during Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-1991. He was a lifetime member of a Bristol V.F.W. post. He retired from several positions with GSA and Kingsport Press, and made many friends from his many associations. He was a member of West End Baptist Church. He was a people person and cherished his family.
He was preceded in death by an infant child and his parents, Wince and Gladys (Yates) Woodward; and siblings, Thelma Louise “Susie” Woodward, Jimmy Woodward and Jerry Woodward.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy (Grimes) Woodward; children, Tina Joseph (Michael) of Big Stone Gap and Johnnie Carrico (Justin) of Gate City, VA; siblings, Bobby Woodward of Big Stone Gap, VA and Betty Graham of Ohio; grandchildren, John-Anthony “Bubba” Woodward, Hunter Phillips (Greta Peterson), Jacob Phillips, Alexis Carrico and Serenity Joseph, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 11, 2025 from 5:00-7:00pm at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave. W., Big Stone Gap, VA.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Gilliam Funeral Home with Dr. Josh Tompkins ministering.
Military graveside rites, by the Virginia National Guard Honors Team and local V.F.W. and D.A.V. posts, will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Michael Joseph, Justin Carrico, Hunter Phillips, Jacob Phillips, David Barker, Gary “Yogi” Bowman and John-Anthony “Bubba” Woodward will serve as pallbearers.
