Jonell Fannon Underwood

Big Stone Gap, Va.-Jonell Fannon Underwood, 87, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the home of her daughter in Norton, Va.
She was born in Stonega, Va. She lived in Mississippi, Florida and North Carolina, while her husband served the country as a member of the U. S. Air Force. They returned to live in Big Stone Gap in 1971. Jonell worked as a cook for The Toddle House and The Dobbs House, both in Biloxi, Mississippi, and The Liberty Café and Kentucky Fried Chicken in Big Stone Gap. She was an extremely hard worker. Jonell was a Jehovah’s Witness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Underwood, Sr.; grandchildren, Chris Underwood, Glen Thacker and Dested Ann Underwood; parents, Doug and Irene (Newton) Fannon; sister, Berita Fannon, Virgie Imogene “Tootie” Fannon, Nancy Caroll Humbert and Shirley Faye Rosenbaum; and brothers, Harold Douglas “Manzie” Fannon and Dillard M. Fannon.
Surviving are her daughters, Julie Thacker, Big Stone Gap and Alma Nora Flanary (Jack), Norton; sons, Jimmy Underwood, Jr. (Carol) and Nelson Eric Underwood (Farrah), both of Biloxi, Miss. and Charles Edward Underwood (Cindy), Baytown, Tx.; grandchildren, Tisha Underwood, Jamie Underwood, Katie Morong, Angela Blackburn, Eddie Ray Underwood, Melissa Thacker, Nelson Ray Underwood, Tiffany Kinser, Kamryn Underwood, Jack “Trey” Flanary, John Thomas Flanary, and Nathaniel Clasby; 18 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; sisters, Annette “Nina” Morton, Bristol, Tn., and Glynis Aistrop, Seminary, Va.; brothers, Bud Fannon (Evelyn), Big Stone Gap, William Allen Fannon, Appalachia, Va., Robert “Shorty” Fannon (Mary), Dryden, Va., and Billy Daniel Fannon, Roda, Va.; several nieces and nephews sister-in-law, Louise (Ray) Fig, Gate City, Va. and Margaret Fannon, Stonega Va.; and her fur buddy, “Max.”
Arrangements are incomplete and the family will announce at a later date.
