Joseph Robert Hamilton

Joseph Robert “Bobby” Hamilton, 91, of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on June 4, 1935, Bobby grew up in East Stone Gap alongside his eight brothers and sisters. He attended East Stone Gap High School and later continued his education at Lees-McRae College. On October 29, 1961, he married the love of his life, Phyllis “Tiny” Hamilton. For the last 64 years, they built a life centered on faith, family, service, and love.

Bobby proudly served his country in the United States Army and later worked as an electrician for Westmoreland Coal Company, where he retired after many years of dedicated service.

A man of deep faith, Bobby faithfully served his church as a deacon and was devoted to God, his church family, and the ministry. He was known for his willingness to help others and for being the person people called when something needed fixing. Bobby loved working in his garden and could seemingly grow anything. He enjoyed watching old Western movies, spending time at the beach, and sharing laughter with family and friends.

Above all, Bobby loved his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Phyllis “Tiny” Hamilton; his son, Derek Hamilton and wife Belinda, and their children Bonnie, Daniel and wife Ana, their children Rowan and Ellowyn; his son, Lance Hamilton and wife Jennifer, and their children Brandon, Caroline, Ashley, and Katie; and his daughter, Angie Hamilton Swan and husband LG, and child Kristen and husband Derek.

He is also survived by his siblings, Nancy, Ralph, Johnny, Frankie and Jerry, along with extended family members, and dear friends.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ann Hamilton; his sisters, Jenny and Katherine; and his brother, Jimmy.
Bobby will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his servant’s heart, his strong work ethic, and his deep love for his family. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the example he set for all who knew him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
