Big Stone Gap, Va.-Monte Dale Head, 71, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at Holston Valley Medical Center’s Wilcox Hall, following an extended illness.

      He was born in Osaka, Va. and lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap.  Monte was Superintendent of the Big Stone Gap Sewage Plant until his retirement.  He was of Baptist faith.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Maggie (Ball) Head.

      Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Carolyn Sue Head; brother, Danny Head and wife, Ava, of Big Stone Gap; several nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, “Lil Bit.”

      The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2020, at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap, Va.  The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Roy Smith officiating.

      Burial will follow at Glencoe Cemetery.

      Pallbearers will be:  Alvin Collins, Joe Sizemore, Smokey Hunter, Chad Head, Robert Head, Steve Messer and Jim Fleenor.  Honorary pallbearers will be:  George Polly and Jimmy Qualls, Sr.
