Phyllis M. Metcalf of Grovetown, Ga passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023 with her family by her side.
She was born to the late William Foster and Opal Wilson Mullins December 6, 1937 in Pennington Gap, Va. Phyllis graduated from Harlan High School, Ky in 1955 and received her Associate Degree in Business Administration from Virginia Intermont College in 1957.
She married her childhood sweetheart of 11 years, Charles Metcalf in 1958. They resided in Lexington, Ky for three years before moving to her family farm in Big Stone Gap, Va. where they lived 60 years before relocating to Grovetown, Ga. Phyllis is survived by her husband Charles, two daughters, Nancy Lynn Sager and Tracey Luanna Slagle. She is also survived by four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Phyllis began her career as a secretary, but when her children were born, she became dedicated to stay at home until both entered college. She then became an accomplished executive secretary for the Virginia Division of Mines and Minerals in Big Stone Gap, Va. retiring with 25 years of service. Phyllis was also an active member of First Baptist Church, Big Stone Gap for 50 years serving as teacher, leader, and singing in the choir.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 12:00 PM at the First Baptist Church with service beginning at 1:00PM with Dr. Garrett Sheldon officiating, followed by graveside internment at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Baptist Church, P. O. 296, Box Big Stone Gap, Va. or to the Georgia Cancer Center, 1120 15th St. AD1104, Augusta, Ga. 30912.
