Appalachia, VA-Roger Akers, 80, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Lee Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pennington Gap, VA.
Roger was a lifelong resident of Appalachia, VA. He was a carpenter for several local contractors. He loved to fish, hunt, building things, whittling and vegetable gardening. Roger was always outdoors enjoying nature. He also had a great affection for several young people, who often called him Papaw. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pennington Gap, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Morrison “Patty” Akers; his parents, William and Gladys (Davis) Akers; and a brother, Ronald Akers.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Darius Akers (Tiana) of Johnson City, TN; and Tara Wallen and her children, Keaton and Emma; sister-in-law, Paulette Hillberg (Frank); brothers-in-law, Leonard Morrison III and Gary Morrison (Darlene); special friends, Owen and Rebecca Carter and their children, Phoenix and Mollie “Sissy,” Kristie Cross (David) and their children, Josh, Jacob and Elijah.
Roger requested cremation and there be no services.
