Sherry Marie Sturgill

Sherry Marie Sturgill, born May 12th 1956, died peacefully in her home in Big Stone Gap, VA, on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Grindstaff Sturgill, father, Garner R. Sturgill, and sister, Bernice K. Sturgill. Sherry was a graduate of Powell Valley High School (class of 1974) and attended Mountain Empire Community College. She was a beloved wife, mother, and was known affectionately as ‘Mamu’ by her grandsons.
Sherry was a part of New Hope Assembly of God in Big Stone Gap, VA, where she was active in the Women’s Ministry for many years. She found joy being near the water, either lake or beach, it didn’t matter. She loved cooking and had a heart for animals, especially her dogs. Her favorite things were her grandsons. She proudly watched Elijah play ice hockey and could always be found snuggling with Caleb.
She leaves behind her husband, Larry G. Sturgill, with whom she recently celebrated 50 years of marriage, daughter Mandy L. Comes, brother, Tim Sturgill; son-in-law Brandon A. Comes, two grandsons, Elijah G. Comes and Caleb P. Comes, sister Patty L. Masters, nieces Amy L. Morrissey and Kristen M. Jessop, nephew Samuel A. Jones, and six great nephews and nieces.
As Sherry was a kidney transplant recipient, the family asks that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, Attn: Gift Processing at National Kidney Foundation HQ, 30 East 33rd Street
New York, NY 10016, in her name, in lieu of flowers.
A celebration of life will occur at New Hope Assembly of God, 1405 1st Avenue, E. in Big Stone Gap, VA, on Saturday, May 10th at 2:00pm.
