Big Stone Gap, VA-Stephen Gale McMahan, 54, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap and was a coal miner with Alpha Natural Resources, among others. He loved hunting , fishing, and riding motorcycles. He loved his family and will surely be missed. He was a Christian.
He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Gale McMahan, Jr.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 13 years, Amanda Garrett McMahan; mother, Joyce (Parsons) McMahan of Big Stone Gap, VA; son, Hunter McMahan of Duffield, VA; step-son, Dylan Laster of Duffield, VA; sister, Christie McMahan of Big Stone Gap, VA; nieces, Raven Cantrell, Lakeith Herron (Austin) and Alli Ramey; special great-niece, Anslei Gale Cantrell; great niece, Blaikley Herron; great-nephews, Easton, Braison and Ryver Herron; and the mother of his son, Melissa McMahan.
Stephen’s wishes were to be cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date.
