Sue Frances Liddle Vaughn
Sue Frances Liddle Vaughn, 85, of Big Stone Gap passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Sue was born on October 2, 1938 in Richlands, Virginia to the late Thomas Jessee Liddle and Vearl Coleman Liddle. She was a proud 1956 graduate of Big Stone Gap High School. After high school she continued her education at James Madison University before completing her Bachelor of Education at East Tennessee State University. She went on to teach for over 40 years in the Virginia and Florida School Systems. She was the president of the Florida Teachers Union for many years advocating for teachers and students in the State of Florida. She was a published author with her piece “Where’s Roscoe” in Chicken Soup for the Teachers Soul. Sue was the past-president of the Women’s Bass Club for the State of Florida. Sue founded Big Stone Gap’s first book club, The Pine Knots, in honor of author Adriana Trigiani. She was also very active in the Friday morning Bridge Club for several years. Her greatest joys in life were being “Granny Sue” to her grandchildren and anyone else who walked into her home, teaching the many kids who stepped in her classroom, heading the Big Stone Gap High School Reunion , fishing, reading any book she could find, and spending time with her family and friends.
Along with her parents she’s preceded in death by her husband, Joe Andrew Vaughn; brother in-law, Kenneth Breeding.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Beth Holding Hagan and husband John; sons, William Thomas “Tommy” Holding and John Michael Holding; sister, Ann Liddle Breeding; granddaughters, Erin Grace Hagan and companion Daniel Wade, Jessica Holding, Brittany Holding, Teresa Holding, and Leslie Porter; grandson, Jessee Patton Hagan and wife, Morgan; great grandson, Luke Andrew Hagan; along with several other great grandchildren, family, and friends.
Per Sue’s wishes she will be cremated with a private graveside service held for the family at Glencoe Cemetery.
